Independent Study Project (ISP)

INDEPENDENT STUDY PROJECT (ISP)

Research or Creative Independent Study

An Independent Study Project (ISP) through the Spanish Institute offers an opportunity to devise and engage a primary research or creative project through fieldwork or specific, expert engagement in or near Seville. The success of an ISP rests on three or four legs: your initiative; engagement with a Spanish Institute mentor; engagement with experts or informants at field locations; and, often, prior approval and support of an advisor on your home campus.

Another way of describing the ISP is to state clearly what it is not: it is not a research paper that you could undertake solely through internet or library resources (a worthy project, but not this one!). The fieldwork component that can only be accomplished in Spain – that involves engagement with people, organizations, phenomena, etc. that are encountered in Spain – is essential to the Spanish Institute ISP.

The ISP might involve a deep dive into a topic that interests you, through observation of people in action, engagement of informants, or shadowing the activities of an organization (versus doing the work of an organization, for which the Spanish Institute “Internship and Service-Learning Program” is more appropriate). It also might involve creative or artistic production or training under guidance of a Spanish Institute mentor and, in many cases, apprenticeship to a local artist, musician, choreographer, etc.

The ISP is a unique opportunity to utilize and develop linguistic skills and cultural understanding while forming new relationships with the members of the host culture related to your field of inquiry and allowing you to explore systematically your particular topic of interest. Your fieldwork will be a means of immersive integration in Spanish and Sevillian culture.

Independent Study Project placements are offered as part of a study-abroad program or as free-standing experiences. They are designed to be credit-worthy with an integrated academic experiential learning course. Most placements require at least intermediate Spanish language skills, some require a higher level, and a small number are with entities that function in English or with minimal Spanish.

WHO WILL YOU WORK WITH?

We will help connect you with local organizations, studios, university faculty, experts, activists, or artists, depending on your interest, project, and language ability. You will also work with a Spanish Institute mentor to assist you with the process of engaging your external supervisor/mentor/guide. If your project involves fieldwork with human subjects, we will advise you on ethical practices.

ORIENTATION

Spanish Institute's orientation gives students vital information about adapting to life in Spain, the program, schedule, safety, activities, transportation, and the resources and practical information you’ll need for your independent study project.

INTENSIVE SPANISH COURSE

Spanish Institute's program includes an intensive two-week Spanish Course for all two or more month placements. There are four hours of class a day and activities in the afternoons. During this time students get to know the city, the transportation system, the cuisine and they improve their Spanish skills.

Our Spanish courses are designed so that students reach an effective and operating level of Spanish in a short time, they concentrate on being able to think and communicate fluently in Spanish. These courses are the perfect opportunity to start learning or to improve your level of Spanish. The program goes beyond class hours, creating an environment with interesting activities and you are also in contact with native speakers. The methodology is participatory, intensive and mainly oral. The classes are fun and at the same time require the interest and motivation of the students.

At Spanish Institute for Global Education we follow a communicative approach to teaching. The fundamental objective of this methodology is for students to learn to communicate in Spanish in a wide variety of contexts and situations. In addition to the language, the students have the opportunity to learn about our culture and the most current issues of our society.
